Core Operational Sections

1

1. O.P.D (Outdoor Patients Department)

The medic & paramedical staff put their utmost efforts that indulge innocent Thalassaemia patients and their parents in routine. Approximately one hundred fifty patients checked-up on daily basis. If we sum-up the figure yearly approximately 25744 patients checked-up in 2024.

2

2. Blood Transfusions

After getting vitals at OPD section, patients recommended for blood transfusion according to their deficient hemoglobin requirement. Hundred plus patients need blood transfusion. Before transfusion, all blood samples which were firstly got through rapid kit at the time of collection then screened again on Electro chemiluminescence Immunoassay (ECLIA) machine, as per WHO standards.

3

3. Sources of Blood & Blood Donation Camps Organization

TPW Society having team consists on 1 x Field Manager Blood Donation Camp and 5 x medic staff always ready to move to field for arrangement of blood through blood donation camps. Except Ramzan Kareem, this team organizes the camps 24/7 throughout the year from all over the Sindh. During the Year 2024 approximately 15420 received blood through blood donation camps.

4. Prevention From Spreading Thalassaemia Major in Targeted Population

(a) Public Awareness:

There are more than 295 camps were arranged to aware general public about Thalassaemia in 2023-24. Colleges, universities villages and different public forums were visited for aware the consequences of Thalassaemia disease and how to prevent spread of such disease.

(b) Sampling and HB Electrophoresis TEST:

Some of the pockets of different areas of SBA division, where frequent cases have been reported, which are affected from Thalassaemia Major Disease. Therefore, it was planned that each of the resident of that village/pocket get tested through HB electrophoresis for diagnosing that either that individual is Thalassaemia Minor or normal. After screening all males/females those, who observed as Thalassaemia Minor have been informed that should not get married with Thalassaemia Minor Females and vise-versa.

(c) CVS Procedure:

It is very fortunate that some of the medic of TPW Society have obtained the training on CVS procedure from well-known Institute of Blood Disease. Approximately one hundred fifty procedures have been finalized in last quarter and same, forwarded to Karachi for further diagnosis.

4. CVS Procedure Results (Prenatal Diagnosis - Total: 288)

Prenatal Genetic Protocol

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) Procedure Overview

"Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test used to diagnose thalassaemia in the fetus, typically performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. It involves taking a small sample of tissue from the placenta, which is then analyzed to check for genetic abnormalities, including thalassaemia. This test can determine if the fetus is a carrier, unaffected, or affected with thalassaemia major. Specifically for mothers of thalassaemic children, the centre provides this service with: Prenatal diagnosis, Family planning, Better health outcomes."
